How to recharge your system and feel happy, healthy and energised.
Now January has passed and 2021 is well and truly settled in, its the perfect time to check-in with yourself. If you’re feeling sluggish and slow after the holiday period and you’re ready to feel fresh, motivated and amazing a detox program may be for you.

What is detox?
Detoxification is a word that gets thrown around regularly and is often associated with juice cleanses, restrictive diets and ditching alcohol over a period of time. Yet detoxification is so much more than that. Detoxification is a natural part of metabolism in which the body undertakes every day to help get rid of waste from environmental, dietary and internally created toxins. These toxins go through a transformation process into less harmful substances which are then excreted from the body.
There are a number of signs and symptoms from fatigue, allergies, digestive symptoms, weight gain and inflammation which may indicate the body may be struggling under an increased toxic load.
The main purpose of a detox is to take the load off the major organs that detoxify the body: the liver, kidney and bowel, and support/improve their function. Therefore supporting healthy detoxification through diet and lifestyle or working closely with a natural health practitioner to form your own personalised detox plan may be the place to start.
7 detox tips for 7 days
You can kick start detoxing safely and effectively at home, in small, daily actions that will help you feel healthy and energised. Note: for detoxing to be highly effective start by eliminating alcohol, caffeine, refined sugar, red meat, processed/fast foods and cigarettes. Here are some actionable tips that will help support your body and mind to detox over 7 days:
1. Avoid processed and sugary foods
Packaged, processed and sugary foods contain nasties additives, preservatives, colours and flavours which quickly and easily place an extra burden on the liver to process and transform into less harmful substances. Focus on fresh fruit and vegetables and whole foods.
2. Start your day with lemon juice
Upon rising, kick-start your digestive processes and alkalise the body by squeezing the juice of half a lemon into a glass of warm water and slowly drinking. Not only will this support the body but boost the immune system as lemon is high in vitamin C and antioxidants.
3. Sweat it out
Breaking a sweat through exercising regularly can help flush toxins out through the skin via perspiration and is a great way to assist detoxification - promoting the circulation of blood and lymph throughout the body and enhancing the elimination of waste products. If you’re not quite breaking a sweat that’s ok, just be sure to move your body every day. Infrared saunas are a great way to sweat and support detoxing too.
4. Stay hydrated throughout the day
The more water you drink throughout the day, the more you’re supporting your liver and kidneys in the detoxification process. Aim for 2L+ a day of filtered water as effective detoxification depends upon water intake.
5. Eat your veggies
Vegetables are high in fibre, rich in nutrients and antioxidants to support overall body function, detoxification and regulate bowel movements. Eat the rainbow and create balanced meals daily.
6. Enjoy herbal teas
Herbal teas such as milk thistle, dandelion and green tea support the liver and prevent the build-up of toxins in the body. They are also a great way to keep hydrated throughout the day.
7. Sleep and rest
Sleep and rest provide an opportunity for the body to heal and rejuvenate. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to support detoxification processes. Use this time to create some healthy sleep habits; read more about sleep here.
The Holistic Approach to Detoxification
When working with a holistic health practitioner there are 4 therapeutic goals when it comes to detoxification. Reduce toxin burden, support the body’s detoxification pathways, neutralise free radicals and eliminate waste products to help you feel happy, healthy and energised. When working closely with a practitioner, detox programs are personalised and this may be done through a thorough investigation, case taking and pathology to assess any underlying drivers contributing to your toxic load. From here an individualised detox plan will be created including dietary and lifestyle considerations. For further advice, speak with a practitioner here at the Infinite Health Studio.
